Is this the set for you?
Choose 77977 for a child who wants to build the animal and keep changing its pose. Its appeal is the pteranodon's moving wings, head, legs and jaw; a child looking for people, vehicles and a rescue story has a different choice in 77981.
A good fit for: Builders ages 7 and up who enjoy animal figures they can pose and display.
Does your child want to build the animal?
The question to settle here is what your child wants to make. In 77977, the pteranodon is built from bricks, and the finished animal remains the focus. That suits someone who is interested in the creature's shape and likes arranging a character on a desk after building.
The squid gives the pteranodon something to chase or catch. A child can move the jaw and wings to stage the feeding scene, then change the animal's pose for display.
Wings change both the play and the space it needs
The head, wings and legs move, and the jaw opens. Those are useful points of adjustment for a character you expect to revisit between building sessions. They let a child change the animal's stance and the direction it faces without rebuilding the whole model.
LEGO lists the pteranodon at over 14 cm high, 20 cm wide and 17 cm deep. Use the width as well as the height when choosing a place for it. A shelf that has room above the head can still be crowded beside the wings.
How it differs from the other baby dinosaur sets
Baby Dinosaur Dolores: Aquilops 76970 is another brick-built animal, with a flowering plant for feeding play. Choose between the winged pteranodon and that ground animal according to which creature the child wants to build; the food accessory serves a similar role in each.
For a younger child who wants to rescue and care for several dinosaur figures, 77981 changes the activity: it is a 4+ rescue-center set with molded animals, two minifigures and a helicopter. Decide whether the gift should be one poseable animal or a setting for several characters before comparing piece counts.
