Is this the set for you?
Choose 77978 for an early builder who likes moving a dinosaur from place to place. The truck, ATV, opening cage and food lure give the play a clear sequence, while Starter Bricks and picture instructions suit the set's 4+ audience.
A good fit for: Children ages 4 and up who enjoy vehicles and a simple dinosaur rescue story.
The transport job is the reason to choose it
The strongest reason to pick this set is the job the vehicles do together. A child can use the ATV and food to lure the young green T. rex into the cage, close it up and load it onto the truck. That gives a child a rescue story with luring, loading and transport to act out without needing another set.
The food details help make the rescue understandable. LEGO includes a chicken leg and a hot dog on a stick, and describes attaching the hot dog to the ATV. The dinosaur has a reason to follow the vehicle rather than simply being parked beside it.
What the 4+ format offers
Starter Brick elements give the models a starting structure, and the instructions use pictures. LEGO also divides the bags so each has a model and a character. For a child who wants to begin playing as the build progresses, that is a more useful detail than the piece count alone.
The 115 pieces are aimed at making this transport scene. If the child chiefly wants to assemble a detailed animal from many smaller parts, compare the 7+ Baby Dinosaur: Pteranodon 77977 instead. Age guidance and the kind of building matter more here than which dinosaur sounds more dramatic.
Truck or rescue center?
Choose the truck when driving and loading are the activities your child keeps returning to. The truck with its cage measures over 9 cm high, 16 cm long and 7 cm wide; allow room around it for the separate ATV and dinosaur during play.
Velociraptor, Stegosaurus & Pteranodon Rescue 77981 is also for ages 4 and up, but moves the story to a rescue center with four dinosaur figures and a helicopter. The truck gives a focused transport mission. The center gives a child more animals and care activities to switch between.
