Mateo's Fire Chameleon
A chameleon so full of personality it almost makes you forget the alternate builds are an afterthought.

The first time I saw this thing posed mid crawl, tail curled and eyes swiveling in two different directions, I actually laughed out loud.
It is one of the most expressive creature builds LEGO has put out in a while, and the teal and orange color story is genuinely striking on a shelf. Where I have to be honest with you is what happens after the main build. The two alternate models feel like they wandered in from a different, much smaller set, and that gap in ambition is real. Get this one for the chameleon itself, not for the promise of three equally good builds.
Best for: Kids and adult fans who want a characterful creature build and are not fussed about the alternate models
What it is
I will admit chameleons are not an animal I expected LEGO to tackle, and that is exactly why this set won me over as fast as it did. The hunched posture, the oddly splayed toes, the way the head tilts independently of the body, someone on the design team clearly studied real chameleons before sitting down with a parts bin. It spits fire instead of catching flies, which is a fun Dreamzzz twist, but the animation of the thing is what actually sold me. Every joint moves with intention, and it is sturdy enough that I was not nervous handling it after building.
The catch
Now for the part I have to be straight with you about. Dreamzzz sets often lean on a main build plus alternate builds structure, and this one does not deliver on that promise. The speedy jet and the mini mech that Z-Blob pilots both read like the kind of small giveaway builds you would expect from a magazine insert, not from a nearly 450 piece box. Reviewers who took the chameleon apart to try the alternates came away a little deflated, and I felt the same. Sixteen stickers also means a bit more patience and careful alignment than I would like at this price point.
Who it's for
If you or your kid are drawn to the chameleon itself, the posability, the color, the sheer novelty of a fire breathing lizard with swiveling eyes, this set delivers in a big way and I would not hesitate to recommend it. If you are buying based on the promise of three distinct, satisfying builds, temper your expectations, because two thirds of that promise underdelivers.
The parts story
What the build is actually like, and the pieces worth knowing about.
Building the chameleon took me close to an hour and it stayed interesting the whole way through, mostly because of how the legs and toes come together in a way that actually looks like something with grip. The body construction builds outward from a spine of technic connections, which is exactly why the finished model can hold a pose instead of flopping. Assembling the head, with those two independently swiveling eye stalks, was my favorite stretch of the build.
The standout piece for me is the new pixelated trans-orange flame element that sits in the chameleon's mouth. It is removable, it catches light nicely, and it is the kind of new mold that collectors of Dreamzzz sets will want to grab from the parts list. I also loved the reuse of teal vehicle wheel arches as eye sockets, a genuinely clever bit of part repurposing rather than a new mold, plus the 3x3 dish eyes topped with black 1x1 round tiles that give the face so much of its character. At 443 pieces including two minifigures and a small Z-Blob figure, the part count is fair, even if the alternate builds do not make full use of it.
