The verdict

This is one of those Speed Champions boxes where you get two builds that could not be less alike, a boxy black G 63 tank of an SUV and a low, curvy yellow SL 63 convertible.

The SL 63 genuinely surprised me with how smoothly its bodywork flows for a car at minifigure scale. Two cars, two drivers, and a fair pile of pieces for the money make this an easy pick if you want variety on the shelf. Just know the G 63's hood is fussy and there is nothing here to reinvent your parts drawer.

Best for: Speed Champions collectors who want two contrasting cars in one hit

The full review

What it is

I did not expect the small car to be the one I kept picking back up. This set pairs the Mercedes-AMG G 63, a tall boxy black SUV with that unmistakable G-Wagon squareness, next to the Mercedes-AMG SL 63, a low yellow convertible roadster. The G 63 nails the truck-like attitude with its narrow grille, round headlights, side steps and chunky arches, and you can open the hood to find a little brick-built engine tucked underneath. But the SL 63 is the one that got me. For a car built at minifigure scale, the way its slopes flow into that curved nose is about as smooth as LEGO has managed, and having the two sit side by side, one towering and one hugging the table, makes for a genuinely fun contrast on a shelf.

The catch

The most common gripe I found, and it comes up again and again from owners, is that the G 63's hood is flimsy and tends to break off the moment you pick the model up. It is not a dealbreaker but it is annoying on a car you will want to hand around. There are also no new molds here, so if you buy Speed Champions sets chasing fresh elements you will feel like you have seen most of this before. And while the price per piece is reasonable at the RRP of around 44.99, several reviewers landed on the same point I did: unless you have real affection for these two specific Mercedes, full price is a harder sell than the piece count alone suggests. Wait for a discount and it becomes a much easier yes.

Who it's for

If you already collect Speed Champions, this is a comfortable recommend. You get two cars with very different personalities, two exclusive drivers, and a build that keeps things interesting by asking you to solve boxy and curvy shaping in the same sitting. Kids from around 10 up will happily swoosh both around, and the owner rating sits at a healthy 4.62 across nearly 6,000 reviews, so plenty of people agree. I would steer away only if you are strictly a display builder chasing rare parts or brand-new techniques, because on that front it plays it safe. Everyone else, especially anyone with a soft spot for the G-Wagon or that yellow roadster, will get their money's worth.

The parts story

What the build is actually like, and the pieces worth knowing about.

Building it is a tale of two moods. The G 63 is all right angles and stacked plates, a satisfying study in getting a boxy silhouette to read correctly, with the roof rack and side steps giving your hands something to fuss over. The SL 63 is the opposite challenge, layering slopes and curved elements to chase a flowing profile, and it is the more rewarding of the two to assemble because you can watch that smooth shape appear. Neither build is long, this is Speed Champions after all, but running them back to back keeps it from feeling repetitive.

The real parts story is color. There are no new molds, so the interest lives entirely in the recolors, and the standout is a run of parts in 316 Titanium Metallic. That shade has been around since 2010 but was long stuck on armor, weapons and droid pieces, so getting basic plates and tiles in it (beyond the odd 1x1 round plate) is a legitimate treat for anyone who builds in metallics. Add in the exclusive printed elements for the badges and details, plus two drivers whose torsos you will not find in any other set, and the value case holds up even if the shapes underneath are familiar.

Fun facts

  • 01The set uses Titanium Metallic (color 316) for basic plates and tiles, a first for that shade, which had mostly appeared on armor, weapon and droid parts since 2010.
  • 02Both minifigure drivers are exclusive to this set, with matching torso prints in white and dark bluish grey.
  • 03It launched in May 2024 at an RRP of 44.99 and carries an owner rating of about 4.62 across nearly 6,000 reviews.
  • 04There are no new molds in the set, so all of the fresh parts interest comes from recolors and exclusive prints.
