The verdict

This is the third time LEGO has built the X-1 Ninja Charger, and I went in fully ready to roll my eyes at another remake.

Then I remembered the little hinged hood still fires a whole motorcycle out of the front, and I softened right up. It is a warm anniversary nod with a genuinely rare figure inside, but at ninety dollars for 691 pieces you are paying a premium for nostalgia and a coin. It shines for the Ninjago fan who watched the show grow up, and it is easy to skip if you already own one of the earlier chargers.

Best for: Ninjago fans who grew up with the show and want the anniversary figures

The full review

What it is

The X-1 Ninja Charger has been Kai's signature ride since the Nindroids arc back in 2014, and for the show's 15th anniversary LEGO has brought it back a third time as set 71867. The hull of the thing is what got me first: it sits low and mean in that deep Kai red, with black accents and fire decals running down the flanks. Lift the hood and the old trick still works, a complete motorcycle launches out the front on rolling wheels, which is the single detail that has carried this vehicle across every version. At 691 pieces it builds up into a chunky, display-worthy car with an enclosed cockpit, and the whole thing reads as a love letter to people who have been watching Ninjago since they were kids.

The catch

I will be straight with you about the price, because it matters here. Ninety dollars US for 691 pieces works out to roughly thirteen cents a brick, and that is steep for a Ninjago car of this size. A big chunk of what you are paying for is the anniversary packaging: the printed celebration coin, the display stand, and the rare figures rather than raw part count or engineering. The design also takes some liberties that split the fanbase. The 2026 body leans into a Formula 1 look with exposed front wheels and a tall rear wing, which strays from the beefy roadster shape of the original 70727. If you loved that classic muscle car silhouette, this one may feel a little too sporty and modern.

Who it's for

So here is who I would send toward it. If you grew up with the show, or you collect the Legacy line, this is a warm little celebration that earns its shelf space, especially for that first-ever Elemental Master of Shadow figure. If you are a newer fan who just wants one great Kai vehicle and does not care about anniversary extras, you can find better piece-per-dollar value elsewhere in the theme. And if you already own the 2014 or 2021 charger, be honest with yourself, because you are buying this one for the figures and the coin more than the car itself.

The parts story

What the build is actually like, and the pieces worth knowing about.

The build itself is quick and satisfying rather than challenging, which fits a set aimed at players as much as display collectors. Most of the time goes into the sculpted red bodywork and the clever hinged front section that hides and launches the motorcycle. There is a decent stack of stickers to place, including three fun ones on the rear written in Ninjargon that translate to lines like 'I know Spinjitzu' and 'Fiya!!!', so take your time lining those up because they carry a lot of the personality.

The real treasure here is the minifigure lineup. You get Kai in his Legacy ZX suit, the villainous General Cryptor, a Prototype X-1 character, and the standout, the Elemental Master of Shadow (Dusk) appearing as a minifigure for the very first time. Add the printed anniversary celebration coin and its stand and you have a collector-focused package. The red panels and fire-decal pieces are lovely for anyone building a wider Ninjago city or garage, and the sword accessories clip neatly onto both the car and the bike, but let's be clear that the figures and coin are the reason to reach for this box.
