I'll be straight with you, the truck itself is not a looker.
It's a dark blue brick with tiny wheels, and I said out loud the first time I built it that it looked more like a delivery van than an Avengers vehicle. Then I popped the roof and the hidden crossbow shot out and I understood why people keep this one around anyway. This is a play set first and a display piece a distant second, and it's at its best in the hands of a kid who wants to reenact an ambush, not on a shelf.
Best for: Kids who want a grab and go play set with stud shooters and a surprise weapon reveal
What it is
The first time I got the crossbow to spring out of that roof, I laughed. It's a genuinely fun mechanism, the kind of thing that turns a plain looking truck into an actual toy you want to play with rather than just look at. That's really the story of this whole set. Captain America and Hawkeye are cruising along, two AIM agents ambush them on a motor trike with an armed drone, and the truck reveals it was hiding a serious weapon the whole time. It's a simple, satisfying bit of theater, and it's clearly built for a kid to act out over and over.
The catch
But I won't oversell the truck's looks. It really is a dark blue box on small wheels, and no amount of stickers or panel work quite disguises that. If you're buying this to display next to your other Marvel vehicles, you'll probably be a little underwhelmed by the silhouette. The stud shooters bolted onto the trike and drone also feel like padding more than clever design, and a few reviewers noted the whole vehicle side of the set leans more toward basic than inspired.
Who it's for
Where this set earns its keep is the minifigure lineup. Getting a Hawkeye who isn't tied to the movie costume is a nice change of pace, and Captain America's printing, down to the double sided face and a fresh dark blue shield, is genuinely good work for a set at this price point. If you've got a young Marvel fan who wants figures to play with and a gimmick that actually delivers, this earns its spot in the bin. If you're chasing display quality or expecting an AFOL level build, look elsewhere in the Marvel lineup instead.
The parts story
What the build is actually like, and the pieces worth knowing about.
Building this one moves fast. There's no fiddly greebling or complicated technique here, just straightforward panel and plate work that gets you to a playable truck in one sitting. It's not a build that will challenge an experienced builder, but it also doesn't waste your time, which matters when the whole point is to get the crossbow gimmick into a kid's hands quickly.
The minifigures are where the piece count earns its money. Captain America comes with a double sided printed head, a choice of helmet or hair, and torso printing on both front and back with silver detailing, plus a redesigned dark blue shield with a black ring outline that's a nice departure from the usual look. The two AIM soldiers share head and torso printing but get different gear, one with a flamethrower and fuel pack, the other running the trike and drone. Hawkeye rounds it out as a genuinely rare non movie variant, which is the kind of thing that quietly makes this set worth a look for figure collectors even if the truck leaves you cold.
Fun facts
- 01The set is tied to the 2020 Marvel's Avengers video game rather than the MCU films, a rare break from LEGO's usual movie tie in strategy for this theme.
- 02It includes a non MCU version of Hawkeye, a figure variant collectors specifically sought out since most LEGO Hawkeyes at the time were tied to the films.
- 03Captain America's shield in this set uses a new dark blue color with a black ring outline rather than the classic red white and blue design.
- 04The set retired after roughly 18 months on shelves and now sells for noticeably more than its original 39.99 dollar retail price.
