This is a set that knows exactly what it is: a fast, cheap way to get Jay and a dragon mech into a kid's hands and into a battle within the hour.
I like that it does not try to be more than that. It will not wow a serious AFOL shelf display, but for a rainy afternoon build with a Ninjago fan it earns its keep. Buy it as a starter set or a stocking filler, not as a centerpiece.
Best for: Younger Ninjago fans who want a quick build they can actually play with
What it is
I love that Ninjago still makes these little grab and go battle sets, because they are honestly where a lot of kids fall in love with the hobby. Jay's Dragon Mech Fight is squarely in that lane. You get a small mech for Jay to pilot and a dragon creature to go up against it, and the whole thing is built to be finished in one sitting and then immediately played with, not shelved.
The catch
I will be straight with you though, at 107 pieces there just is not a lot of build here. If you are the kind of person who wants an engineering puzzle or a satisfying hour of steady progress, this will feel over before it starts. The play features are simple too, the kind of spring loaded or swing action mechanism you have seen in a dozen sets like it, not a new trick.
Who it's for
Where this set makes sense is as the set you hand to a younger builder who wants something finished today, or as the extra you toss in when a bigger Ninjago set is the real gift. It is not a bad use of a modest budget for that purpose. If you already have a shelf of these small dragon and mech duos, though, this one will not feel meaningfully different from what you own.
The parts story
What the build is actually like, and the pieces worth knowing about.
The build itself is quick and linear, mech first, then the dragon, with nothing that trips up small hands along the way. It is the kind of set where a kid can do most of the work themselves and feel like they earned the finished model, which counts for a lot at this price point.
Ninjago's small battle sets usually lean on the theme's stock of dragon wing and horn pieces along with Jay's signature blue color blocking, and this one is no exception. Do not expect a rare new mold or a special print here, the value is in the play pattern and the character, not in chasing an unusual part.
Fun facts
- 01Jay is one of the four original ninja from the very first Ninjago wave back in 2011, and he has been given a mech or vehicle in almost every wave since.
- 02Small mech versus creature battle sets have been a Ninjago staple for years precisely because they let LEGO sell a complete play pattern, hero against monster, at a low entry price.
- 03Dragons have been part of Jay's story since Ninjago's earliest seasons, so pairing him against one keeps this set tied to the show's original mythology rather than a one off gimmick.
