The verdict

I picked this one up expecting a quick filler build and ended up grinning at how much personality LEGO packed into a 221 piece truck.

The oversized wheels and the roof rack do a lot of the visual work here, and once it's sitting on a shelf next to my other City vehicles it genuinely holds its own. It's not a set that will challenge an experienced builder for long, but for a rainy afternoon or a first solo build for a younger LEGO fan, it hits a sweet spot of satisfying and quick. I'd tell you to grab it if you love City's vehicle lineup or want an easy, confidence building project, and to skip it if you're chasing complex mechanisms or a big piece count for the price.

The full review

What it is

This is the kind of set that reminds you City doesn't need a huge part count to feel complete. It's a mountain truck built around presence, oversized tires, a raised stance, and a roof rack loaded with gear, all done in a compact footprint that still reads clearly as a rugged off-roader the moment it's built.

The catch

I'll be honest about the tradeoffs. At 221 pieces this is a short build, and if you're coming from bigger Technic-style City vehicles you'll notice the simpler construction and fewer surprises along the way. It's built to be accessible rather than intricate, so don't go in expecting hidden mechanisms or a long evening of building.

Who it's for

Where it shines is as an easy win. Hand it to a kid who's ready to build mostly on their own, or add it to a City fleet where you want a rugged little truck without committing a huge budget or a huge shelf. If you're after complexity or a big part-per-dollar haul, look elsewhere in the lineup, but if you want a fun, fast, good looking off-roader, this one delivers.

The parts story

What the build is actually like, and the pieces worth knowing about.

The build moves quickly and logically, starting with the chassis and suspension points before the body panels click into place around the big wheel arches. It's a comfortable, low-stress session, the kind of build you can finish while half watching something on TV, and there's a nice little moment when the oversized tires go on and the whole thing suddenly looks like a proper mountain truck rather than a box on wheels.

The tires themselves are the standout element, doing most of the heavy lifting for the truck's rugged look, backed up by a practical roof rack for stowing extra gear. It's not a set stuffed with rare or printed pieces, but the color blocking and body shaping are handled well enough that it doesn't need them to look good on a shelf.

Fun facts

  • 01The City theme has built out an ongoing lineup of off-road and adventure vehicles, and oversized balloon tires like these are a recurring signature across that sub-line.
  • 02Smaller City vehicle sets like this one are frequently positioned as accessible builds for younger fans working up to bigger, multi-hundred piece models.
  • 03Roof racks and exterior gear details are a common way LEGO designers add storytelling to compact vehicle sets without increasing the piece count much.
