The verdict

The first time I got the roof off this thing and peeked into that tiny cabin, I laughed out loud, there's a bed, a kitchenette, and a lamp packed into a space smaller than a shoebox, and somehow it doesn't feel like a joke.

This is a Creator 3-in-1 that actually earns the tag, the houseboat, the seaplane, and the fishing village all feel like different toys, not the same parts wearing a disguise. It's not a showpiece you'll display with pride across the room, the scale is small and the cabin is genuinely cramped, but as a weekend build that keeps giving you new configurations, I think it's a quietly clever little set. If you love vehicles with real interiors and don't need every set to be a centerpiece, this one will win you over.

Best for: builders who want a small, swap-it-three-ways vehicle set rather than a shelf trophy

The full review

What it is

The Riverside Houseboat is one of those sets that sneaks up on you. On the surface it's a modest 396-piece Creator 3-in-1, but LEGO used the swampy, Everglades-inspired theme to full effect, there's a helm, a life-ring, a fishing rod made from a whip piece, and a hinged roof and side panel so you can actually get into the cabin instead of just admiring the hull from outside. The moment that got me was popping the roof and finding a full little apartment in there, bed, kitchenette, television, lamp, all built with real care in a space that's barely bigger than my palm.

The catch

I want to be honest about where this one falls short. The cabin, for all its charm, is genuinely tight, if you're expecting a roomy play space you'll be a bit disappointed. And while the 3-in-1 value is real, the alternate seaplane build is chunky and doesn't offer much beyond looking fun to fly around the room, no cockpit detail, just a seat. At 396 pieces and 2 minifigures, this also isn't a set that feels like a piece-count bargain, you're paying partly for the design cleverness, not the bulk.

Who it's for

This is a great pick if you love small-scale vehicle sets with real interiors, or if you're drawn to 3-in-1 sets specifically because you like rebuilding rather than displaying one static model forever. Skip it if you want a big centerpiece build or a roomy play set for minifigures, the scale here is deliberately compact and the cabin won't satisfy anyone wanting real play space.

The parts story

What the build is actually like, and the pieces worth knowing about.

Building the houseboat itself moves quickly and pleasantly, it's mostly straightforward hull and deck construction using tiles and slopes to keep the surfaces smooth, with just enough SNOT work around the cabin windows and roof hinges to keep your attention. It's a satisfying afternoon build rather than a marathon, and the swap into the seaplane or fishing village afterward gives you a genuine reason to take it apart and start again instead of just admiring it once and shelving it.

The standout here isn't a rare printed piece, it's the brick-built animals. The crocodile and the pelican both do a lot with very ordinary parts, curved slopes and hinge pieces arranged just right to suggest a snout or a beak, and they're a nice reminder that clever part use can matter more than exotic new molds. The whip piece doubling as a fishing rod is a small, charming touch, and the fold-out fishing village includes a little pier and cafe that squeeze extra scenery value out of a fairly modest parts budget.

Fun facts

  • 01Riverside Houseboat was the first Creator 3-in-1 to take on a houseboat model, drawing inspiration from marshland houseboats like those found in Florida's Everglades
  • 02The set was available from January 2019 through the end of 2021 before being retired
  • 03Beyond the two minifigures, the set includes brick-built animals, a crocodile and a pelican, built entirely from standard parts
  • 04The included whip piece does double duty as a fishing rod for one of the minifigures
