A little headquarters that actually understands how a four year old plays.

The verdict

I handed this to a preschooler and watched the whole thing get taken apart and rebuilt into a completely different game within ten minutes, which is exactly what a 4+ set should do.

The headquarters splits open, there is a spinning web feature that kids yank on constantly, and the scale of everything is forgiving enough that small hands never get stuck fumbling with tiny clutch-power pieces. It will not challenge an adult builder for even a minute, and it is not meant to. Buy it for the kid who loves Spidey and His Amazing Friends and wants a base for daily imaginative play, not for anyone chasing a satisfying build.

The full review

What it is

This is one of those sets where I have to remind myself who it is actually for before I judge it. Team Spidey Web Spinner Headquarters is built for the Spidey and His Amazing Friends crowd, kids who are three, four, five years old and want a home base for their heroes, not an engineering puzzle. The headquarters itself opens up into a little interior, there is a mechanism that spins to mimic web-slinging, and the whole thing is scaled with big, chunky, forgiving pieces that little fingers can actually manage without a parent hovering to help.

The catch

I will be honest about where it falls short too. At 193 pieces this build is over quickly, and there is no version of this review where I tell an adult collector or an older kid to pick it up for the building experience, because there really isn't much of one here. The play feature is fun the first dozen times a kid spins it, but it is also the part I would expect to wear out first with heavy daily play, that is just the nature of moving plastic parts in a preschool set. It also lives entirely inside its own little bubble, if your household ages out of Spidey and His Amazing Friends this set does not really transfer into a bigger Marvel collection the way a mainline Super Heroes set would.

Who it's for

Get this for the exact kid it was designed for, a Spidey and His Amazing Friends fan who wants a headquarters to run daily adventures with their favorite trio of characters. Skip it if you are shopping for an older builder, a display piece, or anyone who wants their LEGO time to include an actual challenge, because that is not what this set is trying to be.

The parts story

What the build is actually like, and the pieces worth knowing about.

Building this one takes almost no time at all, which is the point. The instructions use the same simplified, high-step-count-per-piece approach LEGO uses across its 4+ line, so a parent building alongside a preschooler will breeze through it in well under half an hour. There is no sorting anxiety here, pieces are large, colors are bold, and nothing requires the kind of fiddly alignment that trips up small hands.

The pieces themselves are standard fare for the preschool Marvel line, oversized bricks in the reds and blues you would expect, plus the minifigures themselves are really the highlight of the box. Getting Spidey alongside teammates from the show in this scale is the actual draw for the target audience, the building is just the wrapper around getting those characters into a kid's hands as fast as possible.

Fun facts

  • 01Team Spidey Web Spinner Headquarters is part of LEGO's 4+ line built around the preschool animated series Spidey and His Amazing Friends, distinct from the mainline Marvel Super Heroes theme aimed at older builders and collectors.
  • 02The 4+ line consistently uses larger, simplified pieces and higher per-step piece counts than standard sets specifically so young children can complete builds with minimal adult help.
  • 03Sets in this sub-theme are designed around a physical play feature, in this case a spinning web mechanism, rather than around display accuracy or part-count value, which is why the piece count stays modest compared to mainline Super Heroes sets.
